Our Programs
Since its revitalization, the System Office and constituent units (CUs) of Ugnayan ng Pahinungód have initiated numerous programs that are relevant to the needs of underserved communities and the Filipino people as a whole. The UPD Ugnayan ng Pahinungód revived a set of its past programs given their continuing significance in solving long-overdue problems in the country. Moreover, the office develops new programs to respond to the present-day challenges that confront communities within and outside UP Diliman.

SYSTEM-WIDE PROGRAMS
Below are the regular programs implemented by all Ugnayan ng Pahinungód Constituent Units:
Gurong Pahinungód (GP) Program
The Gurong Pahinungód program is a ten-month deployment of volunteer teachers (called as “GPs”) in remote public schools recommended by the Department of Education (DepEd). To prepare them for engagement, they are given a one-month training by the UP College of Education. This training is equivalent to 18 credit units for an Education degree which qualifies them to take the Licensure Examinations for Teachers.
To volunteer as a Gurong Pahinungód, the volunteer must be
- Be a graduate with a baccalaureate degree from the University of the Philippines; and/or
- A UP graduate student who has earned at least six (6) units and must be able to provide suitable proof thereof
Affirmative Action Program (AAP)
The Affirmative Action Program (AAP) is part of the university’s efforts to democratize access to college education. The program is designed to prepare senior high school students for university life. The program includes leadership workshops and tutorial sessions for taking college entrance examinations, such as the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT). These are held in partnership with the UP College of Education and the Office of Admissions.
To volunteer for the Affirmative Action Program, the volunteer must
- Be a student, faculty, REPS, staff, or alumni of the University of the Philippines; and/or
- A UP graduate student who has earned at least six (6) units and must be able to show suitable proof thereof.
As an AAP Volunteer at UP Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, I had the opportunity of contributing to the organization's noble mission of democratizing access to quality college education. Through our participation in the UPCAT Caravan, we engaged in meaningful conversations about the importance of higher education and encouraged students from partner schools in Tarlac and Zambales to take the UPCAT. Additionally, we assisted in conducting orientation sessions on the various UP constituent units, programs, and application processes, as well as administering simulation exams to students from underserved and remote public high schools nationwide. This experience not only guided students but also highlighted the transformative power of education. It was a humbling and inspiring opportunity, reinforcing my belief in the profound impact of affirmative action programs in expanding educational opportunities for all the Filipino youth - affirming their dreams and aspirations to pursue college and reach their full potential as the hope of our nation.
Chris Duarte
Being an AAP volunteer was a meaningful experience for me. Not only was it a way to connect with like-minded UP community members, it also became an avenue to advocate for each youth’s right to education. Seeing the joy and the gratefulness of the students, teachers, and administrators because they were given an opportunity to apply to the university really made this volunteering experience worth it. There are more Filipino youth that have yet to be reached by the university and hopefully, you can help in doing so by volunteering in the AAP!

Tutorial Service Program (TSP)
The Tutorial Service Program (TSP) provides learning sessions for in-school children and out-of-school youth. The TSP is geared to promote students’ holistic development as individuals and improve academic performance.
UP Volunteers teach subjects or content areas in the partner school for a particular grade level. A number of preliminary assessments are made before the conduct of sessions. The modules to be discussed depend on the needs of the students. Volunteers are then given workshops to be equipped with the necessary information for conducting tutorials among students.
To volunteer for the Tutorial Service Program, the volunteer must
- Be a student, faculty, REPS, staff, and alumni of the University of the Philippines; and
- Must attend a TSP orientation and other required training hosted by the UPD Ugnayan ng Pahinungód.
I signed up to be a volunteer of UPD Ugnayan ng Pahinungod in 2019 when it was relaunched as a revitalized program of UP Diliman. As a volunteer member of the UPD Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, I had the opportunity to be trained initially in its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management program and later to its tutorial services program. Much of my involvement at that time was in the latter where immediately after the training, I was deployed as part of a team that provided reading tutorial service to selected high school students from Krus Na Ligas High School. Through all these [my volunteer work], I find a true sense of what UP stands for beyond honor and excellence.
Prof. Crisline Torres-Pilapil
We conducted tutorial sessions for Grade 7 students of Balara High School last year [2022] and the tutorial sessions were conducted online. Isang challenge ito para sa akin na isang child's rights advocate and involved also in programs for promoting children's education kasi first time nagawa ito online. Siguro ang greatest impact na makukuha ko from the sessions that we conducted -- we received messages from the kids saying how much they appreciated the sessions we conducted to them and now that they're doing face-to-face classes, nagagamit nila yung nagawa namin during the online tutorial sessions.

Teacher Development Program (TDP)
The Teacher Development Program (TDP) is a capacity-building program where UP faculty help develop and train public school teachers by sharing their expertise on pedagogy, teaching methods, and subject areas.
To volunteer for the Tutorial Development Program, the volunteer must
- Be a graduate student, faculty, REPS, staff, and/or alumni of the University of the Philippines; and
- Must be an expert in the field that s/he will be teaching; and
- Must attend a TDP orientation session and required training
I have been a faculty volunteer sa Pahinungod since 2019.

The Buhay Pahinungód Program is designed to promote the importance of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) in underprivileged communities through a series of training and informal discussions during community visits. Additionally, the program aims to establish DRRM brigades in order to strengthen the resilience of chosen communities near the UP Diliman campus and beyond.
To volunteer for the Buhay Pahinungód Program, the volunteer must
- Be a student, faculty, REPS, staff and/or alumni of the University of the Philippines; and
- Must attend an orientation-training on Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management by the UPD Ugnayan ng Pahinungód.
Overall, para sakin ang pagiging Pahinungod volunteer is both an honor and responsibility because we are engaging with real people and deal with real life problems and lahat ng ginagawa natin is nag-iiwan ng impact sa kanila kaya importante na planado ang initiative and well trained ang volunteers. Pahinungod ang nagbukas ng opportunities to grow as a person and to improve my craft. Tinuruan ako na magkaroon ng concern sa paligid ko at ibahagi ang natutunan ko di lang sa partner communities pati na rin sa community na kinabibilangan ko.

I started as a volunteer in 2020. Ako po ay walang alam sa psychosocial support programs, at dito na lang natuto sa tulong nila Dr. Jowi and former UPD Pahinungod Director Dean Joyce Caragay and that really will characterize or yun po yung experience ng volunteering na kaiba sa Pahinungod at sana ay maranasan niyo rin. Yung experience na yun na tatlong taon na pong ongoing yung programa, nakakatuwa makita yung growth ng programa, yung pagdami ng volunteers at yung buwan-buwan na kumustahan para sa mga lahat ng psychosocial support volunteers ay malaking tulong po maski sa aming nagvovolunteer. it has been a source of support, friendship, camaraderie mismo sa aming volunteers na naghahatid ng serbisyong ito sa iba.
Assoc Prof. Michelle G. Ong, Ph.D.
I started my Pahinungod volunteer journey in 2020 as a peer support volunteer. Ito yung kasagsagan ng pandemic. I decided to be a volunteer because, at that time, I wanted to be an active volunteer during the pandemic para I felt fulfillment -- na hindi lang ako nakatingin while the world was in chaos at that time. Being a Pahinungod volunteer has given me the opportunity to learn and improve skills and techniques. It has also empowered me personally so I could be of better help to others. and most importantly, [it fulfills] my duty as a member of the UP community which is to serve the nation and its people.
Ms. Ann Thea Capiznon
