Tutorial Service Program at National Children’s Hospital

On December 6, 2023, the UPD Ugnayan ng Pahinungod Office, together with the chosen representatives from Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, travelled to National Children’s Hospital to conduct UPD Pahinungod’s Tutorial Service Program. This took the form of a puppet show, a demo, and a puppet-making workshop.

Upon arrival at the venue, the team was welcomed by Kythe Foundation Child Life Officer – Training Ms. Carol Tongco. Due to the lack of centralized space, it was agreed that the team would split into two and the learning session conducted simultaneously across the wards. Prior to the start of the entire activity, Ms. Tongco gave an overview of what to expect to the guardians of the children admitted into the wards. Following this, the entire team was introduced before the floor was given to Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, led by Dr. Amihan Ramolete.

The learning session began with a demonstration of the various types of puppets, how to create them, and how to use them. Due to the nature of the location, each participant was able to see up-close each puppet type. This was followed by a short performance from Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas of their most recent play: Prinsipe Bahaghari

Afterwards, participants were each given workshop kits, and Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas Puppeteer Mr. Sigmund Pecho took over as facilitator. Instructions were given to participants on how to proceed. While the first ward was getting instructed, the second half of the team – led by Dr. Ramolete – proceeded to the second ward, where the entire process was repeated.

Once the puppet-making workshop began, the Pahinungod team also split into two – the first group charged with overseeing the proceedings in both wards, while the second group handled distribution of materials and snacks, and ensured the accomplishment of the attendance sheet. Following the conclusion of the puppet-making workshop, participants were encouraged to join in a group photo before the entire delegation packed up. A total of twenty-eight (28) participants were able to complete the entire tutorial session.

The UPD Pahinungod delegation then proceeded to have a debriefing session with Ms. Tongco, sharing insights on their experiences with the children. Once finished, the team returned to UP Diliman.
